NDIS and External Services

We recognise that externally funded allied health and specialist therapies play a valuable role in your child’s development. NDIS-funded service providers can be approved to work on school grounds during school hours, provided it supports the student's educational goals and does not disrupt the school day.

External service providers

Our Learning and Support Team reviews applications for the following in-school activities:

• Observations - The therapist observes students in the school environment to see how they interact and learn. This may be required for specific therapy reports and assessments.
• Teacher Consultations - The therapist meets with a student's teacher to share expert strategies that can be integrated into their school routine or learning programs.
• Stakeholder Meetings - The therapist participates in collaborative planning sessions involving parents, school staff and external agencies.
• In-Class Support - The therapist works directly alongside the teacher to implement, model and share strategies that complement a student's learning.

School protocols

We do not support therapists withdrawing students for one-to-one private therapy sessions. Under the Education Act 1990, our primary responsibility during school hours is delivering the educational curriculum. Therapy is most effective at school when it is integrated directly into the student's existing learning program.

If a therapist is working directly with students, they must be known to the student. Introducing unfamiliar adults can disrupt routines and impact the emotional wellbeing of students.

We strongly encourage an alternating 'week at school, week at home/clinic' routine, allowing therapists to share strategies with both school staff and families for continuity of support, and ensuring they gain essential insights with the student outside the high-sensory school environment.

Requirements for Providers

Before any provider can be approved to work at the school, they must meet strict NSW Department of Education safeguarding requirements. The therapist must:

1. Be fully registered with the NDIS.
2. Hold a current, verified Working with Children Check (WWCC).
3. Complete the Department's Mandatory Child Protection Training and a school-based induction.
4. Provide proof of appropriate Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance.
