Positive Behaviour Learning(PBL)

PBL stands for Positive Behavioural Learning. PBL is a positive, proactive approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviour. Students are given a clear set of expectations based upon behavioral goals chosen by the school community. At George Bass School we have introduced a school-wide PBL system that aims at teaching positive or expected behaviours based on our school values; we are learners, we care and we are safe.

The core elements for a successful PBL system in any school are as follows:

-Behavioural expectations are clearly defined. In our school students are given explicit examples of positive behaviour expectations these are supported through the use of augmentative communication. This includes picture communication symbols.

-Behavioural expectations are taught. Specific lessons regularly occur in classes focused on learning about the positive behaviours required by our values. Students are able to practise positive behaviours and are supported by modelled behaviours.

-Reward system for appropriate behaviour. A school-wide system for rewarding positive behaviours is used across learning environments in the school. This includes during classroom lessons, during playground time and during assemblies.

-Continuum of consequences for problem behaviour. In our setting, this refers to consistently applying the language of our values and expectations to reinforce positive behaviours and redirect from undesired behaviours.

-Continuous collection and use of data for decision-making. A successful PBL system uses data to make decisions about teaching and learning directions.
